A Walk Through Wakefield

In our September hybrid meeting we were accompanied by Wendy Jewitt on “A Walk Through Wakefield”.  Wendy is Library Officer, Information and Culture, Wakefield Council.  Her illustrations were taken from the website “Twixt Aire and Calder” which is a freely available online archive of over 11,000 images covering the Wakefield District. This archive was started in 2002 by lottery funding, and is published and cared for by Wakefield Council Libraries.

A feature of the talk was its interactive nature, with much contribution by members of the audience to identify the location or date of some of the photographs. This is actively encouraged by the Library Service, as many of the photos were not adequately labelled when they were acquired.

Members who missed the talk can access Twixt on the Internet at http://www.twixtaireandcalder.org.uk/ There are five virtual “heritage trails”,  including two that cover the second world war period. These are pre-prepared photograph galleries.

You can also identify photos according to your own criteria by searching for place names and/or keywords and can limit by date.

This is an excellent resource for local and family historians, and we thank Wendy for sharing it with us.
