Gerry Southworth
Days at the Methodist Day School in Thornhill Street, and Thornes House, and the impact of the 39/45 War
Born and bred in the centre of Wakefield, our speaker Gerry Southworth, after National Service, went to the University of Leeds where he graduated in Economic History way back in 1952. Although originally intent on a political career (he was President of the Wakefield Labour Party for a year after graduation) he subsequently joined Unilever and then Booker, working on the planning and creation of large scale agro/industrial projects in East Africa and then around the world. His last job was Personnel Director of Booker Agriculture International.
Retirement took Gerry and his wife to Dorset where they have lived happily for many years, although he still has a love of the North, and Wakefield in particular.
